Theodore Roosevelt put it very aptly when he said,

"Every man owes a part of his time and money to the business or the industry in which he is engaged. No man has a moral right to withhold his support from an organization that is striving to improve conditions within its sphere."

Most businesses join organizations for the benefits and services they can provide. Every association has the obligation to serve its membership - meeting their needs whenever possible. Some of the more recognizable benefits derived from membership in the Funeral Directors Association of Kentucky are:

** Membership Directory **

FDAK has produced a Membership Directory of all member firms, branches, licensed employees and associate members. The directory will be updated each year with current member listings and will be provided to all paid member firms.

** NEW...Public Relations Promotional Package **
"Do You Know What A Funeral Director Does For You?"

Brand new to member firms, FDAK, in conjunction with MKJ Marketing, has created an advertising package promoting the advantages of a licensed funeral director to consumers. This has the potential to reach 2.7 million KY citizens and directs them to member firms.

The Trust pays the $5 Attorney General fee and also files the required report with the Attorney Generals office.

The irrevocable trust is available for individuals who are applying for or are on federal entitlement programs, i.e. SSI and Medicaid. As another benefit to our trust participants, we provide the contract forms and trust brochures FREE.

Funeral Funding Trust of Kentucky is constantly striving to offer you services that will strengthen you trust program.

** Monitoring of Funeral Service Legislation **

Your Association is constantly alert to legislative developments affecting funeral service, on a national level as well as within Kentucky.

When necessary or when deemed advisable, your Association represents your profession before Congressional and Legislative Committees and/or federal agencies. Some examples of recent legislation are:

  • Exemption of funeral merchandise from 6% sales tax at the retail level
  • Irrevocable Trust Law

    ** Aftercare Manual **

FDAK members are given a new, highly sophisticated resource program titled "GriefWork: Guides for Survival and Growth." This resource will soon be available on audio cassettes. This publication will assist the funeral director in helping their families prepare for and deal with the death of a loved one.

    ** Disaster Program **

FDAK's Disaster Preparedness Committee has trained many funeral directors and embalmers to be qualified Mortuary Disaster Coordinators. These coordinators can be called into any disaster scene to provide much needed service to the coroner in charge. FDAK is now a member of the National Foundation of Mortuary Care through NFDA.

** Continuing Education Voluntary Recognition Program **

This program is offered to individuals who have completed 25, 50, 75 and 100 hours of approved continuing education. Awards will be given to honor these individuals for their accomplishments.

** Blue Cross/Blue Shield Health Insurance Group Rates **

By joining forces, the Kentucky funeral firms enrolled in state association membership receive a special group rate for health insurance from Blue Cross and Blue Shield. This package is negotiated annually in order to provide our member firms with the best coverage for the least amount of dollars. Benefits are derived by "pooling our resources" and facing our needs united.

    ** Scholarship Program **

FDAK has established a scholarship foundation with the intent to ease the financial burden encountered by mortuary students. Awards are based on financial need, academic performance, recommendations, and articulation of the applicant. Over $25,000 has been paid to scholarship recipients. Contributions are tax deductible.

    ** Special Rates at State Convention/Mid-Winter Conference/District Meetings **

Special member rates are made available to all Association members when attending state meetings and scheduled seminars.

    ** Professional Liaison **

Association staff, officers, and board members are in continuous contact, on a weekly and sometimes daily basis, with funeral director associations and other professional groups to represent the concerns of our industry and discuss matters of mutual interest. Through cooperation with many other associations, we are able to bring you the best programming possible.

    ** Resource Library **

Your Association has compiled a Resource Library consisting of books, brochures, videos, governmental compliance manuals, public relations and speech material, and members may borrow any of these materials for reference at no charge.

** Fellowship With Other Members of the Profession **

FDAK offers Kentucky's funeral directors the opportunity to meet other members of the profession in a non-competitive, social environment at annual conventions, open debate on business practices, and permits discussion of mutual problems and concerns. Frequently, these informal discussions lead to changes in individual industry operations that improve profitability and/or increases efficiency in the provision of service to the clients. Through its channels of communications, the Association generates a trading up of ethical values and standards of business conduct.
